Obituary

Morris Lewit (1903–1998)

MORRIS Lewit, known in the Socialist Workers Party of the USA as Morris Stein, died recently at the age of 95. He joined the Communist League of America in 1930, and became a National Committee member of the Workers Party of the USA in 1934. After the SWP was founded in 1938, he continued to serve on the National Committee. He was an active member of the Plumbers Union in New York City. During the 1940s, whilst the Minneapolis Eighteen were in prison, Lewit served as National Organisational Secretary of the SWP, and he continued in this position into the postwar period. He withdrew from the SWP in the early 1960s, but remained a revolutionary.
