Attack on Civil Liberties Deepens

Editorial

Although the United States government is trying to distance itself from the horrific treatment of noted Irish Republican activist Bernadette Devlin McAliskey at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport, on Sunday, February 23, friends and supporters of Ms. McAliskey are turning up the heat.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice claimed that the former Member of Parliament from Northern Ireland, was denied entry to the country because her visa waiver had expired. According to Gorge Martinez, Ms. McAliskey’s case was treated under the same rules that apply to all British and Irish nationals under the visa waiver system.

Mr. Martinez declined comment on allegations that the Immigration and Naturalization Service was behind the events at O’Hare, because of McAliskey’s alleged links to proscribed Irish political organizations.

Less than 24 hours after the above statement, the State Department told the New York City Comptroller’s office that it was all a terrible mistake. We’ll see! The Transport Workers Union wants to test this by inviting McAliskey to speak in New York City.

We at Socialist Viewpoint believe this is a significant development in which the Bush/Ashcroft propaganda machine was trying to link Bernadette with terrorism. It represents the latest escalation of the U.S. war on the civil rights and liberties of everyone in America.

Close associates of Ms. McAliskey in New York are calling on all Americans to voice their outrage over this scandalous assault on the rights and persons of McAliskey and her daughter by sending letters and E-mail messages of protest to your Senators, Congressmen and the President of the United States.

We will keep our readers up to date on this and other related developments as they unfold.

Arthur LeClair, Contributing Editor of Socialist Viewpoint, prepared this report and will keep our readers informed on further developments in this case.
