Comrade Enver Hoxha teaches us that:
the call to struggle for unity is not a simple one that can be used for tactical ends. It is a very serious and fundamental problem of principle, equally for the present as for the future. (Socialist New Albania’s Twenty Years of Existence, 1964, pg. 76 – our translation from the French)
The CCL(ML) defends the principle of the struggle for the unity of Marxist-Leninists. We sincerely desire this unity. But this unity must be built on the basis of clear principles. There can be no unity with opportunists. There can be no organizational unity between Marxist-Leninists before there is political unity.
In speaking of organizational unity with the Lasallian opportunists, Marx says: “One knows that the mere fact of unification is satisfying to the workers, but it is a mistake to believe that this momentary success is not bought too dearly”. (Karl Marx, letter of May 5, 1875, in Critique of the Gotha Programme, Peking Editions.)
Since its creation, the CCL(ML) has always maintained that the unity of Marxist-Leninists must be based on a clear ideological and political line. The struggle for unity is inseparable from the struggle against opportunism both within the Marxist-Leninist movement and outside its ranks.
The unity of Canadian Marxist-Leninists must be made and will be achieved in so far as we wage the struggle to obtain it. We must start from what unites us and by engaging in struggle over line, in a determined manner, resolve our differences one after the other in order to reach a higher level of unity – a higher level of unity around a correct political line which will guide us in the revolutionary struggle.
Comrades, our central task is to build a single Marxist-Leninist party which alone will guarantee the unity of the whole working class. The struggle to unite Marxist-Leninists is thus a revolutionary duty of every communist. Comrades, take up our responsibilities towards the proletariat and the socialist revolution.
