Natural Resources for US Growth
Hans H. Landsberg
John Hopkins Press/OUP, 16s (paper).
The United States has the option of making a large proportion of its natural resources or of buying them. Whichever the choice, the consequences will reverberate throughout the world in The ne~t few decades. Landsberg’s book – a shortened version of a massive joint effort with Leonard L. Fischman and Joseph L. Fisher – gives a sketch of the conditions of the choice: the likely quantities involved, the technical openings, and so on. While he does not predict which way it will go, the very existence of choice on this scale means that starvation and misery are not the inevitabilities they appear to be in most of the world today. Given conscious direction, resources can be found for all our purposes and more. That, of course, is the political problem: who is to give the direction and how?
